Paul Davies
British Dressage Trainer - Freelance trainer covering North Wales and North West England

Paul was brought up near Colwyn Bay. He started riding at 4 years of age at a local riding stable and was immediately bitten by the "bug". From then on nothing was safe - he scrambled aboard his grandfather's Shire farm horses, and even insisted on sitting on one of his more docile cows (Sandra) as she came in for milking.

His competition career started when he became a permanent fixture at Llandulas Riding School, owned and run by sisters Alice and Rachel and their mother Mrs Jones. Paul worked there in return for rides initially, then went on to trying and competing many of the horses that came onto the yard either as school horses or to be sold on. At that time show jumping was his main focus.

A career as a civil servant meant that Paul's involvement with horses, whilst always continuing, had to be confined to his spare time. When not riding, he began to earn his reputation as a trainer. His involvement with dressage came via young stock bred by Paul and his close friend Janet Hall from a mare whom he had evented. Warmblood influences led him and Janet to focus more and more on performance breeding, with Paul riding and training the results of their efforts.

By now he was having help from Stephen Clarke, Calman De Jurenak, and also Sue Bradshaw with whom he still trains. The opportunity to become involved in horses full time arose in 2005. Since then he says he hasn't looked back!

His own horses are loaned out to clients, and in addition to his training commitments, he now rides mainly for Rose and Alan Brooke at their Marian Bach base. Currently he is riding Desteny MB, whom he rates as "the best horse he has ever had the privilege to sit on".

Paul is a member of the British Dressage Regional Trainers Club (formerly Pyramid Trainers), benefiting from seminars and training events with top class trainers such as Carl Hester and Ferdi Eilberg.

He is also the British Dressage North Wales representative. In this capacity he has already set up clinics with Spencer Wilton and is determined to bring other "names" to the area and to open up opportunities to more Dressage enthusiasts in North Wales.
